On the easel (August 2026)
Pastel is my favourite medium for still life. Here is a photo of a near-completed painting, with a diverse range of green soft pastels resting on the easel. I use hard pastels to finish the details.
I’m attracted to chiaroscuro for still life, for which I have created a selection of cardboard boxes that I’ve blackened on the inside and cut out flapped holes through which I point a light source.
I will make the painting available for sale when it’s framed. It’s not feasible to sell or ship unframed pastel paintings until protected behind glass.

I did the fish paintings below in a painterly style with pastels. They are framed in good-quality dark-brown wooden frames with technical glass. Rather than use a mount, my picture framer used invisible blocks to distance the painting from the glass. I sold both of these paintings recently (in mid 2026), however I intend to do more.
Would you like to commission me to paint still life pictures in this painterly style in pastel, or in oils perhaps?

Butterflies
Both drawings – Small Tortoiseshell on Nettles, and Comma on Brambles – are coloured pencils and graphite pencil on paper (20cm x 15cm), £120 each, unframed, or £200 for the pair.

I used to do illustration work in coloured pencils for advertising/promotional literature, although in a looser and more informal style than these studies.
